Outdoor Grilling: Safety is Top Priority by SERVPRO®

Outdoor Grilling Outdoor Grilling

Outdoor grilling and smoking are popular activities, especially during warm weather. Here are some essential safety tips from SERVPRO® Team Hamann to keep in mind when enjoying your BBQ outdoors:

  1. Choose the Right Location:
    • Place your grill on a flat surface away from enclosed spaces, trees, shrubs, or patio furniture. Stray sparks can be more dangerous than you think.
    • Never barbecue in your trailer, tent, house, garage, or any enclosed area because carbon monoxide may accumulate and pose a risk.
  2. Keep an Eye on the Cooking Temperature:
    • Use a thermometer to monitor the cooking temperature. Properly cooked meat ensures both flavor and safety.
  3. Be Careful with Charcoal and Wood:
    • If using a charcoal chimney to ignite your charcoal, avoid burns by using a long match.
    • Once the fire has started, do not add more lighter fluid.
    • Once the grill is lit, do not try to move it.
  4. Use a Two-Zone Cooking Setup:
    • Create two heat zones on your grill—one for direct heat and one for indirect heat. This allows you to control cooking temperatures and avoid flare-ups.
  5. Keep Flammable Liquids Away:
    • Remove any flammable liquids from the grill area.
  6. Clean Your Grill Properly:
    • Clean your grill after each use to prevent grease buildup and potential fire hazards.
  7. Have the Right Tools on Hand:
    • Using the right tools and supplies is key for safe grilling and smoking.

Remember, safety is essential for grilling and smoking success. Enjoy your outdoor cooking while keeping these precautions in mind! Safety tips provided by SERVPRO® Team Hamann of Utah County and Downtown Salt Lake City.
